Spooktacular Fitness Challenge!

Happy October everyone!! It is officially my favorite time of the year; Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, which my son clearly knew and decided to be born two days before on October 29th. Since I am trying to better my health and overall fitness level I decided to set out a challenge for myself and thought I would share it here if anyone wants to join me or share what their October fitness goals are.

I am late to the game as it is currently October 2nd but we’ll count yesterday and today as prep days. This is totally casual and just a little schedule I put together for myself so definitely feel free to alternate it to your lifestyle and needs but I think Fall is a great time to step up the fitness game and really work on my goals before the holiday madness truly begins. Just a reminder that I’m a stay-at-home mom whose husband works in the emergency field and works long shifts typically 5-6 days a week so some of the workouts on this challenge are at-home and ones I have either done before or am eager to try! As always please let me know what you like to do to motivate yourself and make changes toward a healthier life. Until next time guys, BOO! -Chrissy

LazyGirl Weight Loss Hacks

Let’s be real, sometimes lazy hacks are the best hacks and I fully stand by that since as a toddler mom I will take all the lazy tricks I can. Losing weight is seemingly easy right? There’s a formula: eat less calories than before, eat healthy foods and be active. Unfortunately, as it tends to do, life can get in the way and make seemingly easy tasks a bit more difficult to sort out. This summer has been a bit overwhelming for many reasons, some good and some bad, but as it is coming to an end I am finding my weight loss getting “easier.” Here are some tips and tricks I’ve been using, some of which I wasn’t even aware of until I really thought about what I was doing differently lately. If you have some tips of your own please feel free to share below I’m sure many of us would love to hear them! Until next time, xo Chrissy

  1. Coffee please!

Now I don’t know about you guys but I am a bit of a coffee addict, not the caffeine but the actual taste of great quality coffee. I tend to drink my coffee black with a pump or two of vanilla but I’ve noticed I’ve been drinking my coffee after I have breakfast instead of later in the morning and it truly does, along with a hearty breakfast, help curb my appetite and I don’t feel the need to snack or turn to unhealthy snacks as the morning/day goes on. If you are like I used to be and enjoy your coffee filled with creams, an unholy amount of flavoring and a lot of milk, try taking steps toward eliminating some of these items from your cup of joe one week at a time and eventually you will start looking forward to the taste of pure coffee without all the added crap (excuse my language.) Not only does the black coffee help curb cravings but it truly is better for us than the mocha caramel frappes with extra whipped cream that are not good for our health and aid greatly in weight gain.

2. Pile on the breakfast

I have noticed that when I was running ragged this summer I didn’t get to put much emphasis on breakfast for myself; maybe some oatmeal here and there or grab a bagel when I could, and not unexpectedly my weight continued to stay the same or go up. Now that the craziness has calmed down I have been making large breakfasts composed of whole foods, I find myself snacking much less and have more energy to conquer MomLife as well as those Orangetheory workouts that got neglected over the past month. I’m not a nutritionist or expert but I would argue that breakfast should be our highest caloric meal of as it truly does set the tone and keep us going for the day ahead.

3. Get your move on

Some days I can’t get into the gym or fitness studio and that’s just a fact for most of us out there but I’m trying to fit in movement where I can in order to at least have some form of cardio for my body, even if it’s something short and simple. For example, last night my son wanted to watch Disney Music Videos (shoutout YouTube) and instead of just watching him dance while I sat on the couch, I got up and we had a dance party for half an hour; and let me just say my legs were on fire by the time I got into bed. Today, instead of driving to the store a few blocks away, I decided to walk and know that this is a habit I should get in the habit of since it’s easy and allows me to get some fresh air as well.

4. Eat carbs, just don’t go crazy
I personally don’t know how people live without carbs, especially since it is essential for brain function so it drives me crazy when people say to have no carbs whatsoever. That being said, I’m not saying to go out and eat a dozen donuts. Eat complex carbs that give lasting energy and help with weight loss instead of hinder it. I’ve been consciously trying to keep my distance from processed carbs and not only do I feel better but I notice I appear less bloated and can see weight loss starting to happen, slowly but surely.

Although these are only a few lazy hacks I will share more as my journey continues and hope you will share your lazy-girl-or-guy tricks as well.

My husband gained a job: I gained weight

It’s no secret that I’ve been struggling with my weight on and off for most of my life, but the last half a year or so it has really skyrocketed and has been so hard to get any off. I have been wracking my brain as to why this happened and then I had a realization. Last Fall my dad was sick, which has been years worth of struggle but we can get into that a different time if I feel the need. Anyway, I was so busy going back and froth from the hospital and my husband was still in the background stages of his government job so there was a lot more down time for him to watch our son and hold down the fort for me etc. I dropped a lot of weight during this time and kept it off over the holidays. Then in January my husband started his new job (which I am so grateful for and we are so lucky that he has the position that he does,) however his schedule is 12 hour shifts, a lot of overtime and shift covering etc. because he works in public safety/emergency services. Needless to say this creates very little free time for him and everything around the house and regarding our son fell on me. Don’t get me wrong I was used to doing most of that but with additional time for me to be able to go to the gym routinely, take a shopping break a couple of times a week etc., and suddenly I had no time at all. We rely on our parents for child care when we really need it but do not have a babysitter etc. due to how expensive it is and I had decided to stay home for these few years to raise Sean and not put him in daycare. I don’t think I realized how hard its been to have my husband in a job that requires such unusual hours and long shifts and how I have completely put my needs on hold for the most part, which I know sounds like I’m complaining and things could be so much worse but I know you guys are ok with a little venting session know and then. Putting my mental and physical health on the back burner for half a year has absolutely affected my body negatively and I know I need to scratch and claw my way back to a better healthier situation. I am hopeful that when Sean starts school next week (for a couple of days a week) that I can start to mend myself and look and feel how I know I should, and we all deserve to feel healthy and strong in our own bodies. Being on this end of the spectrum I can see how much I would take my health and athleticism for granted when I was in good shape but would only ever see the negative about myself, which makes me want to kick myself looking back on it. I know that I need to get my health straightened out in order to be the best version of myself and would love any tips on how to do that from those of you that are parents or have busy jobs or just have gone through health battles of your own. Sorry for the random somewhat complain driven post but this community has been so uplifting and you guys have messaged me some great advice before and I am so thankful. Until next time XO Chrissy

Deliciously Easy Weight loss Recipes

As we know, we can’t maintain a healthy lifestyle without eating properly and fueling our bodies the right way. Exercise alone is not enough to be healthy and feel good inside and out, which is something that has taken me a long time to realize. I have definitely ranted on here about how parenthood leaves little time to focus on ourselves and our needs but thats not an excuse so I am trying to make sure that healthy eating stays a priority and is not only necessary for me but for my son as well. Funnily enough I have actually been inspired by my toddler who prefers salads to burgers and snacks on fruit and veggies like they’re going out of style. Here are some easy recipes made from whole foods that are delicious and fan favorites around my house. If you give these a try I’d love to hear about it! Until next time xo Chrissy

Pizzelle Ice Cream Sandys

If you come from an Italian family like I do, I’m sure you grew up with at least one aunt who made the best homemade Pizzelle cookies! Now I hope to learn how to make them myself but for now, I buy them from Whole Foods and they are actually extremely delicious and as close to the real deal as I have found.

Ingredients

Pizzelle cookies
Ice cream (we used a coconut based one for anyone who can’t have dairy)
Chocolate chips and/or sprinkles

Directions

Ok now bear with me here this is about to get complicated. Scoop your ice cream and place in-between two cookies. Sprinkle some chocolate chips or sprinkles onto the ice cream and eat immediately as you will not want to wait a second longer to try this delicious combination!
Chocolatey Meringue

I bought meringues from Trader Joes for the first time the other week and loved them! For store-bought they were so light and airy and have the perfect amount of flavor. My son loves chocolate of any kind so I decided to take some dark chocolate chips and melt them (I suggest using a pot and melting them on Low, stirring continuously until it reaches a nice melted consistency but not runny.) Dip the meringues in the chocolate and place on parchment paper until the chocolate solidifies on the meringue. It was so easy and made for a delicious, low in fat treat.

The Taco Berry

Ok this one was really fun for the family to make together and is something you could totally customize to your own liking.

Ingredients

Organic toaster waffles
Whip cream or a non-dairy whip cream
Chopped strawberries, blueberries and blackberries

Directions

Toast waffles according to packaging directions. Once toasted, immediately fold into a taco shape. Spray whip cream to fill the taco and top with the fresh berries. Another ridiculously easy treat that is fun and delicious.

Orangetheory Fitness: Honest First Impression

Alright guys sorry for being MIA but I did warn you these couple of months are insane. Since I’ve been trying to get my health (both mental and physical) to a much better place, I’ve tried a bunch of different things this year to see what works with me and what doesn’t. The other week after having lunch with my son across the street from an Orangetheory I decided to pop in and see what all the hype was about. I’d also like to note I have no personal ties to this company or any other fitness studios and/or products I use, that would be nice but I have no connections to fitness-related companies. When I walked into the studio a very nice young man (yes anyone under 25 to me now is young,) explained the concept of their approach to workouts and I signed up to take a trial class the week later. I went to the 9:35 class on a Monday and not going to lie, I was really nervous. Luckily for me I was one of four newcomers that morning so it was nice to go into it not being the only one having no idea whats going on. Now if you’re interested in trying an OTF class I’d do some research, check YouTube, go talk to someone at your local studio etc., in order to really see if its right for you or not, but I’ll talk about the main things that really drew me into the workout as a whole. At first we separated into two groups and I was in the group that started on the treadmill/rowing circuit first while the other half started on the floor circuit (aka weights, resistance training etc.) I like how it really is you in charge of how much you will push yourself during class but there are others in it with you; and I should mention I really enjoy how there is a coach there who keeps the group motivated and also helps when you are unfamiliar with something but isn’t all up in your face aggressively like some bootcamp style workouts. Now I went to another class later in the week but could only make it to the 7:30 class and I should have known better because I really struggle as the day goes on (#MomLife) but it was the only option I had that day. It was an incredibly tough workout and I could feel myself getting exhausted but I pushed myself and felt really proud when the workout was over; I won’t lie afterwards I felt really sick and was still nauseated the morning after but I know my body was probably in actual shock. I’m not going to act as if these workouts were the most fun in the entire world but talking to people who have been sticking with them I can see how they become addicting and the results I’ve seen have been incredible of people reaching such amazing fitness goals with the help of these classes. There’s music, the treadmills have personal fans on them which was a huge plus for me and anyone else like me that is very heat sensitive and everyone who worked there has been nothing but encouraging and helpful. So even though I have only had one week there, I did sign up and would recommend this for people who need to shake things up and get their body out of a rut. I hope to do more updates as my journey with this continues and will be back with some fun recipes as well. Whats your guys favorite workouts and have you tried any new “trendy” workouts that you actually were impressed by? Until next time, XO Chrissy

Even the best of times cause anxiety..

This summer has been the busiest one I can remember. Being in all of these weddings in a row, while an honor, has been a bit more stressful than I was imagining. As someone who has had anxiety since I was 18, I know that even though staying busy can be a good thing, sometimes when times get TOO busy, it can really send my anxiety into high gear. The thing about anxiety is that it comes from nowhere sometimes and other times it’s as if your body knows you’re under a lot of stress and is trying to tell you because your brain hasn’t really realized it yet. That seems to be exactly what’s going on lately. Even though these events are wonderful, the planning and execution and traveling is starting to add up and I can physically feel it. On a side note, planes make my skin crawl so that is another huge contributing factor. We also just found out that we can’t take our dog up to the first wedding..which may I reiterate is this weekend so that’s just another hurdle to have to jump on top of every day life and trying to get ready for the trip itself. Yes I am aware that there are much worse things in life and I never take my health and these experiences for granted, however anxiety spares very few of us and it truly does turn easy events into difficult ones when it occurs. I guess I’m writing this because it’s whats been on my mind a lot lately and anxiety/mental health issues have had such a stigma but I do see people being more open about their problems and I think it’s important for all of us who suffer to remember that it really is so common and we aren’t alone in these struggles. Luckily my anxiety got much less extreme as I entered my mid-twenties but I’m fairly sure it is something I will have to deal with all of my life and finally accepting that has actually helped me see things in a more positive light. Just knowing that I will always need to work on my coping skills and management is ok with me and I’m aware of it. As the bachelorettes and showers have come to an end, this weekend marks the first of three weddings in a row and, just like a rollercoaster, I know that the anticipation of leading up to this is what’s causing the most of the anxiety and once I’m in the moment it will start to dissipate. Thank you for listening to a seemingly random ramble but if it resonates with you at all I hope you know you’re definitely not alone. I have a fitness update coming soon but wanted to write this while it was on my mind for those who can relate and also for myself, which is truly the greatest part of writing. Until next time, XO Chrissy
